For the first time in the history of the Pakistan Super League – Women Coaches Join Multan Sultans. Former England international Alex Hartley is becoming the specialist spin bowling coach for the Pakistan Super League team Multan Sultans. Alongside her, former Irish player Catherine Dalton is set to assume the role of fast-bowling coach, making history as the first female coach in the PSL.

One of the franchises of PSL, Multan Sultans has appointed former Ireland cricketer Catherine Dalton as the fast bowling coach after which she became the first woman coach in the history of PSL.

Also, Kathryn Dalton is the first female bowling coach of the men’s team at the top level.

Background of Both Coaches

Hartley was a key player for the English team in the Women’s World Cup 2017. England won that World Cup too.  She retired from professional cricket in August and continued her association with the sport as a broadcaster on the BBC’s Test Match Special. Additionally, she will maintain her role as the co-host of the No Balls Podcast alongside England seam bowler Kate Cross.

Hartley holds a Level 2 coaching certification. This position with Multan Sultans marks her debut at the top tier.  She has also experience of coaching youth cricket at Lancashire.

Born in England, Catherine Dalton gained Irish citizenship in 2015, playing four ODIs and four T20 Internationals. She continues to play for Essex in women’s county cricket while simultaneously pursuing her coaching career.

Catherine Dalton has visited Pakistan twice and working with fast bowlers in South Punjab.

Catherine Dalton is an (ICB Level Three) Advanced Coach and has also coached at the National Fast Bowling Academy in England.

Also, Kathryn Dalton worked with bowlers like India’s Deepak Chahar at the Peace Foundation.

“I am excited to work with Multan Sultans in the PSL,” Kathryn Dalton said in her statement on being given the coaching responsibilities in the PSL.

She said that I had worked with Multan Sultans before.

Other Female cricketers worked as a Coach

The duo is following the path set by former England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor. Who has been coaching men’s cricket with Sussex since 2021 and also with Manchester Originals in The Hundred.

Former England coach Lisa Keightley also collaborated with the Paarl Royals men’s team in SA20, South Africa’s franchise competition.

Ali Tareen expressed immense confidence in Catherine Dalton’s abilities. As the owner of Multan Sultans in the PSL, Tareen shared his thoughts on Dalton’s historic signing, highlighting her significant contribution to the franchise’s player growth program over the past five years. He emphasized his trust in her capacity to mentor young players effectively and boost their personal development. Tareen remarked, “I have observed the positive impact on player’s growth and also believe for more. I was completely confident that she would eventually assume the role of a high-level fast-bowling coach, and I am thrilled that her first opportunity has arrived with the Sultans.”

It is the first time in PSL history that both balling coaches are female. Ali Tareen, the owner of Multan Sultans shows his confidence in these coaches. The lineups for the 2024 PSL haven’t been finalized yet, but the tournament is scheduled to kick off on February 8. Multan emerged victorious in the 2021 season and secured second place in the last two editions, narrowly missing the title this year by just one run to Lahore Qalandars in a thrilling final.
